Who loved ‘playing house’ when you were little? The dishes, the baby dolls, the fake food. I had a metal avocado-green refrigerator and wooden play stove in my “house”. And my favorite things to make in my play-kitchen were thick plastic, pink steaks served with thick plastic, green broccoli and paired with a side of painted cherry pie for dessert. My Dad built us a picnic table and somehow managed to lift that big thing into our tree house where my kitchen was. All of my cabbage patch dolls had their first meal there and I remember serving everyone and anyone that was willing to come over and play house with me! I loved it. And as much as I adored playing it, you know a game I never played..?? Laundry.
Seriously. Who in their right mind enjoys playing laundry?? Perhaps those of you who enjoyed playing ‘vacuum’ and ‘dusting’ in your playhouses?! Agh!🙅🏻
Well, I’m still playing house. It’s become a little more involved with more dishes and broccoli to serve, but I still adore it and I’m BLESSED to still be doing it. The book of Haggai is only two chapters long and it talks about a house. The Lord’s house. Four times this little book instructs us to “give careful thought” to our ways and our days.
“Now this is what the Lord Almighty says: Give careful thought to your ways. You have planted much, but harvested little. You eat, but never have enough. You drink, but never have your fill. You put on clothes, but are not warm. You earn wages, only to put them in a purse with holes in it.” (Haggai 1:5-6)
‘Purse with holes in it’? ..ouch. The prophet Haggai is telling us that God wants us to pay attention to what we’re doing. While we may be busy with our own little houses, HIS house “remains a ruin”. (Haggai 1:9) The people came together and began to work on building a house for the Lord..and as they work, He tells them to “Be Strong”…that He is “With Them”..and in verse nine that, “The glory of this present house will be greater than the glory of the former house..and in this place HE will grant peace, declares the Lord Almighty”.
Houses don’t get built in a day. And sometimes we may need to stop and give that ‘careful thought’ to the ways of our home..and the things going on inside of it. Be strong, beloved. And do the work that brings peace into the place where you live so that your present house WILL be greater than your former..💪🏼🙏🏼
